Success Story of the Month – Chanele McFarlane
What do you do?
By night, I manage my two side businesses. First, I am the Founder and Editor in Chief of Do Well Dress Well, a resource to inspire young professional women to succeed in style. I create content in the areas of personal branding, social media, networking, professional development and dressing for work. I’m also about to start working one-on-one with other young professionals to build their personal brand (both online and offline), create strong resumes, cover letters and Linkedin profiles and develop a unique personal style that helps them looks fashionable yet professional in the workplace. I’m extremely passionate about showing people how doing well in your career is tied to your personal style just as much as it is to the quality of work you produce. You have to do well and dress well in order to succeed both professionally and personally.
Because of my expertise in marketing and social media and my passion for helping others succeed, I also recently co-founded a consulting company with my husband called Vision Vertical. We provide services in the areas of digital marketing, branding, copywriting and process improvement.
The greatest success story of your career?
In 2015, I was one of PR in Canada’s Top 30 Under 30 and earlier this year, I was one of 10 nominees in the Social Media category for the Notable Awards. This recognition has not only been extremely humbling but it has really encouraged me to keep working hard and pushing towards achieving my dreams.
What’s your motivation?
I’m motivated by my passion for personal branding and style and inspiring others to use the two to succeed in their personal and professional lives. I genuinely love being a helpful resource for people.
Advice for other Hip Hausers?
That idea you have? Start now. It is so easy to second guess yourself and feel like you’re not ready. Truth is, you’ll never be 100% ready so it’s better to just get started and figure the rest out along the way.
Wear a statement piece to a networking event. When you’re attending an event like Hip Haus, wear something that stands out -whether it’s shoes, a jacket or my personal favourite, a necklace. You’ll not only stand out among the crowd but it will give people a reason to strike up a conversation with you – such an easy way to break the ice! Also look out for other people who are wearing statement pieces, if you’re struggling with starting a conversation – give them a genuine compliment! Everyone loves to be compliment and you’ll find that you’ll lead into a natural conversation.
