What do you do?
The greatest success story of your career?
Hmm… that’s a good question. It’s hard to say because I don’t even feel like I’ve reached the level of “success” I’ve always strived for just yet. But, this year I got to interview Amber Rose in person, which was super cool!
What’s your motivation?
Pushing myself to meet my goals. Nothing makes me feel better than setting a goal in my mind, writing it down and then making it become a reality. One general, everyday goal of mine is to share the stories women of colour and other underrepresented groups. This is why journalism is my passion. Because this way there’s a platform for these narratives. I don’t want to speak on behalf of anyone who I don’t represent, but I want to push the envelop on diversity in media more and more everyday.
Advice for other Hip Hausers?
Never give up! Things get rough at times. Sometimes things don’t work out as you expected, other times you may be living on air sandwiches ’til you get paid. It’s all part of the journey. When I hit tough times I try to use it as best I can as a learning experience instead of dwelling on the negatives. Also, network, network, network. You never know who you’ll meet. And always be willing to help someone out without expecting anything in return.
